Your Specialty – You Can’t Be

Everything to Everyone Every Time

Having a specialty (niche) is about becoming an authority in your field and having a special treatment interest in a specific area. It is a specific area you will be known for in your community, your state, and even your country because you are the best at it.

Think of the difference between a general practitioner and a specialist. A specialist devotes all their time, study, and attention to perform a very specific treatment procedure. And it’s one that they do extremely well. Because of this, they normally have a large wait list, and clients will travel across town and even interstate to see them. They will not cancel appointments because they realize how hard it is to see this specialist.

As health and wellness practitioners, we like to be able to help each patient that comes through the door for whatever condition they have. This is the reality.

You can’t be everything to everyone, every time.

If you are trying to treat everyone, you never have the time to really be an authority in anything. You will be trying to do a little bit of everything.

It’s hard think of any prospective client who wants to see a health practitioner who does a little bit of everything. Here’s an example. If you drive past a clinic, especially an acupuncture or naturopathic clinic, so many times you’ll see a long list of conditions that they treat, right?

Let us help you with:

Back and beck pain, sciatica, anxiety, insomnia, fertility, digestive disorders, allergies, circulation, migraine, asthma, arthritis, blood pressure, vision problems, depression, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, irritable bowel syndrome, carpal tunnel, hair loss, fatigue, bloating, tendonitis, sinusitis, hay fever … you get the picture.

There’s 20 or 30 conditions listed, and there’s one practitioner’s name at the bottom.

So the first question we ask is how good can they be at any of those things that they have listed? Are they a bit of a jack of all trades, master of none? And who really wants to trust their health to someone that knows a little bit about 50 different conditions. A prospective client wants to trust their health to a practitioner who devotes most of their time and energy to the problem the client has. And they will pay whatever the practitioner charges to see them because they are the best.

If a potential client wants treatment for asthma, when was the last time this health professional treated asthma? Was it six months ago? Was it a year ago? How much has this practitioner been reading and studying on a regular basis about the condition the client is giving them valuable time and money for?

If a client wants help for fertility, think of the problem then need solved. It is a deep emotional need in many people to realize their dream of having a family. They will be spending a lot of time and money looking for that solution. Obviously, they want, no, expect to go to a health professional that devotes 100% of their time to treating fertility.
